Pollution

Pollution is any thing that causes a negative impact on the environment. Pollution is one of the few problems in the world that we can prevent by using electrical vehicles and other resources. It kills thousands of people and animals daily. To prevent it from happening, we should convince people not to use their cars. In countries such as China, people are suffering from air pollution. In fact, most people in China are dying because of the pollution. They might even cancel the Beijing Olympics because of the pollution! To prevent more pollution, you should do the following:

  • drive hybrid cars
  • bring your own bags to the grocery store
  • don't smoke
  • do not dump trash in the ocean
  • use earth friendly energy sources such as sun and wind

Some ways you can keep yourself from getting harmed by pollution are ....

  • sitting under a tree (the tree gives out oxygen and takes in CO2)
  • try to walk or bike to school or work
  • if you see an empty can or bottle, pick it up and throw it in the recycling
  • try to buy a used book instead of a buying a new one (it will save paper if you buy a new book and it might save your money)

Recycling

If you recycle, it can be a huge help to your home environment. What recycling does is use the item you recycled, such as glass, paper, metal, textiles, and plastics, and it reuses its energy. Look at the environmental effects of recycling below.
Materials
Energy Savings
Air Pollution Savings
Aluminum
95%
95%
Cardboard
24%

Glass
5-30%
20%
Paper
40%
73%
Plastics
88%

Steel
60%

When people don't recycle, many harmful things happen to our environment. Over twenty-five percent of energy is used by producing aluminum cans. 350,000 aluminum cans are produced every minute! We use over 80,000,000,000 aluminum coke cans every year. When you smell a dump, you actually smell the paper in the dump. If everyone recycled their newspapers, we can save almost 250,000,000 trees each year. Americans throw away 25,000,000,000 styrofoam coffee cups each year.Every month, we throw out enough glass bottles to make a skyscraper. Out of all of these fifty united states, New Jersey has the highest recycling rate of all states. 56 percent!

Smog

There are many types of pollution. For example, there is a type of air pollution called smog. The word smog is a combination of smoke and fog. It can give people diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema. According to the World Health Organization, there is up to 13,000 deaths per year from outdoor pollution.
